Gabrielle Downey is a Birmingham based consultant gynaecologist who studied medicine in Ireland. She chose gynaecology as her speciality as she wished to empower women to make informed choices about their own health. She trained in various hospitals in London including Queen Charlottes before coming to Birmingham. Her research was looking at the causes of abnormal smears and resulted in her being awarded an MD. She has been a consultant gynaecologist at the Birmingham City Hospital for over 15 years. Miss Downey publishes regularly in renowned journals and writes for medical text books, was a co-author to the current NHS cervical smear program, and has specialist expertise in problems such as abnormal smears among many other conditions. Over the past 12 years her service has progressed and developed and she now offers a wide range of gynaecological services including, pelvic pain, prolapse, fertility issues, period problems and female sexual problems. She is the Lead for Colposcopy at her NHS Hospital, is the ex-chair of the BMI Medical Advisory Committee and has recently been featured in Channels 4’s “The Hospital” and an expert on “Embarrassing Bodies”. Following my heart led me to the West Midlands to complete my training on the West Midlands regional training scheme and I was appointed to a consultant post in 1997.
